Small Things, Real Difference
Recognise a useful act of kindness and offer it in a way that respects the other person.
My neighbour's name was Mark. He was only 54. He lived alone and he struggled with his mental health. He did not take his own life.
When he stopped turning up for work, five days passed before his workplace reported him missing. Five days. The police found him dead. I had to identify him.
A couple of years later, I still carry the guilt. Why didn't I check on him? Why didn't I knock? Would it have made a difference? I don't know. I will never know. But I wish I had knocked.
Before all of this, he was Mark, my neighbour, someone living close by, behind a door I could have knocked on. And he is the reason I created the Community Champion course at Pheon Academy.
I wanted to do something with the feeling that has stayed with me. To help people notice when someone might be struggling. To give them the confidence to start a conversation. And to help them know where to turn when someone needs support.
You don't need to work in care, you don't need qualifications, and you don't need to have all the answers. The course is completely free and open to everyone.
I can't go back and knock on Mark's door, but I hope that because of him, somebody else will feel ready to knock on their neighbour's.
His name was Mark. He was 54. And he mattered.
If someone came to mind while you were listening to this, please reach out to them. And if you'd like to feel more confident about what to do when something doesn't seem right, take the free Community Champion course at Pheon Academy.

Community Champion began with something very personal.
Mark was Gary Stapleton's neighbour. His death left Gary with a question that never completely went away: could simply noticing, checking in and knocking on a door have made a difference?
This is why Community Champion exists.
Sometimes helping starts with something very simple: noticing that something does not seem right and being willing to reach out.
Community Champion is free and open to everyone. You do not need to work in care, hold qualifications or have all the answers.
The course is designed to help people feel more confident about noticing when someone may be struggling, starting a conversation and knowing where to turn for support.
For adults aged 18 and over. Free learning and a free digital award.

Something to learn. Something to be proud of.
